RiteTrax More and probably More Still

Posted on

There will always be events that surprise you, catching you off guard in a really pleasant way. It’s the same thing with businesses. Rite Trax is a business, it also puts on events and also looks to be a lot more than that as well. Music and its performance may be the first thing that springs to mind, eyes and ears with them but as you should know your eyes and ears can also be delighted and sometimes surprised by its other core interests – art and poetry. Admittedly the art and poetry are not classic gallery and museum pieces, delicately crafted oils and the like, the poetry is not the stuff of high-class salons, coffee table volumes or any of it consumed with a gentle sherry and cigar. The art, poetry, music is the stuff of ordinary, living and working people of the city and beyond. It also magically properly manages to go beyond a lot of club culture and attracts a real range of ages, from youth to (in my case) ancient and greying. All of this is so good. You will find much of it catalogued by a variety of photographers as well – check the Rite Trax website and facebook page.

RiteTrax CIC :: A platform for underground culture

The average club night has a minimal story, certainly it has a beginning, middle and end, the better events have a particular style of progression fitting that timeline. Art and poetry events tend to be rather more linear and flat, only certain of them have a story that builds. Rite Trax does so much more. Most of their events have a progression that involves a real unfolding of activity and experience with a variety of areas of participation. This can truly be less of a short story or simple monologue, as it were, and far more a mixed or multi genre novel or an interlocking series of episodes all in one.

So – the question is where next for Rite Trax? There will certainly be more events at a range of venues around Sheffield and possibly beyond. The poetry angle and art side of things will be developed, there may be audio books, video, prints and original works of art to be sold and displayed. There is also talk of a record label.

Nightlife and its joys

Posted on

chimg7

There is nothing like the night and all of the joys you can find there. I miss my clubbing days. I miss djing and vjing, creating for events, entertaining even a small crowd. I have managed to play at quite a few clubs in and around Sheffield, also enjoying the events as an attendee. I had great fun going out to such and beyond to festivals and free parties with my daughters – yes! strange I know, but still. Even though I am in my 60s now I still love this music. It may seem odd for someone such as myself to still have a love of 2 step garage, drum and bass, dubstep, future bass, drumstep, trap, glitch and more but there you have it.

via Room 303 707th birthday ft. ANORAK and BAXTA!!!.

10734217_10152754459150325_9103235430333332907_n

After a mini-break, Room 303 returns; or rather Room 707 as we’re smashing it out 7th birthday style! And of course we only want to celebrate the tearing up of dancefloors for seven solar rotations in the most marvellously devastating of fashions. So, not only will we be having another early start of 9pm (get down early as it’ll be totally worth your while!) but – as always – we’ve invited very special guests to bring birthday goodie bags packed full of gabba cakes, party snare poppers and amen break twizzles alongside the usual residents who’ll undoubtedly be bouncing up and down and running round like loons before being sick in the corner. Providing the music for this intense evening of celebration are:

ANORAK (Jungle Syndicate / OffMeNut)
An absolute legend of the breakcore scene, we’ve been obsessing over Anorak ever since catching utterly gobsmacking sets in his home base of Bristol and, of course, destroying Boomtown’s Prohibition Den. This man has chopped more amens than Gordon Ramsey has onions (shit analogy, go home, you’re drunk – ed.) and peppers his insane break edits with twinkly melodies, rave barks and acidic squelches to make the most manic and joyful gabba-breakcore that is bound to get you raving your tits off and make for a fucking amazing night!

BAXTA (Hell is Hard/Headfuck Records)
Baxta has been absolutely exploding onto the gabber scene as of late. Live he’s played at huge events alongside massive names (including Ibiza Goes Hard, Horizon and Oblivion) and, as one third of UKTM, has had tunes on skullcracking labels such as Headfuck records (getting support from legends of the scene such as Akira, amongst others). His amazing sets reveal a diverse range of styles and influences, so expect crunching, clanging crossbreed and breakcore to sit perfectly alongside the most stomping gabber and speedcore. This is going to seriously go off!

Plus more resident and guest-based action:

A.R.D.
Pied piper of partying – whether it’s banging freeform, hellish DnB or anthemic Dutch gabber, it’s guaranteed to have you going nuts.

BEE-LOG
New daddy Bee-log is bringing a more breakcore-oriented direction to his usual gabber mashups; super fast mentalist devastation promised!

BLACKLIGHTS & BUTANE
Guests of honour, these two are provided the dirtiest and filthiest in bass-led electro.

MUMBLIST vs SINISTATEK
A super special b2b – the Room 303 stalwart goes to battle against the Tinnitus resident; expect amens, kicks and dark rhythms to spatter out in the melee!

Memoria – deep soulful house – click the link above

As you may have guessed I have something of an eclectic taste in music. Particular forms of music fit with various of my moods – and no I am not just endlessly moody! I do, however, run through a whole gamut of feelings in the average day and so sucha typical day can be filled variously with anything from deep, soulful and chilled house

– I also have a love of old soul from early 60s days through to new soul – nusoul, neo soul –  by way of 80s and 90s sounds

– on into moody trip hop – I retain a real love of all sorts of artists from Portishead to London Grammar by way of Bonobo and the list would go on endlessly

– and then to drum and bass, which would include the full range of old jungle, raggaed up or not, and including liquid, atmospheric and intelligent – so my tastes go from Congo Natty to Bukem, from Marcus Visionary to Calibre

– I must mention an abiding love of 2 step garage, broken beat, chillstep, dubstep, drumstep – just go and check out my mixcloud and mixcrate pages

DARKUS

“With over ten years in the game, playing the north and south of the UK, Darkus knows how to bring the noise, Dark by name Dark by nature: welcome to the Darkside.”

ANN D – https://soundcloud.com/#ann-d-1

“Ann D started Dj-ing in the time honoured way, playing a weekly 3 hour show on a pirate in the late 90’s, not because she woke up one morning wanting to be a DJ but because it was the only way to get the sort of show she wanted to listen to. After years of going to blue’s clubs, festivals and dancing her way through many music styles she had a vinyl collection that ranged from Prince Fari, Alpha & Omega, Beefheart, The Velvet Underground to The Orb, A Guy Called Gerald, the dirtiest English & German techno, breaks and DnB – that’s the kinda radio show she wanted to hear. Bizarrely and despite not having decks or being able to mix a cake, after about a year she was booked to play out, at which point she thought I’d better buy some technics and learn how to mix. Since then she has gone on to play all over the UK, Europe & Mexico playing with everyone from Rootsman, Richard Kirk, Aphex Twin, Tayo, The SUF Liberators & The Orb on their tour, she was resident at a night called Headcharge which often made the Mixmag top ten best nights in the UK before the council closed the venue down, she’s guested on numerous Radio shows both here & in Berlin, appeared on Channel 4, produced the soundtrack for a photographer’s book launch, featured in documentaries, written articles for various music mags and is soon to soundtrack a short film. She still continues to play a weekly show, on a legal station now – SCR Radio and thinks she’s lucky to be able to share her tunes.”

north n south (DJs Si McLean & Rich Pastrami)

These guys linked hands across The Watford Gap with the purpose of bringing old skool party vibes to The Steel City. Eclectic dance floor focussed sets are their bread and butter and they will be keeping things bass heavy for this party. Expect jungle, d n b, house, hardcore and old skool rave classics. BOOM!!
