Down at Plot 22, the venue created by Rite Trax the jourbey developes for Cranni, a musical adventure centres around Nigel Cranswick. Coming soon there will be an ep and then, it is hoped, at least 3 albums. I will be supplying the visuals for the opening event – 7th September, Cubanos, Sheffield. The whole story, though, is so much more interesting, some of which you can find on the Cranni blog – the english version and the dutch version – see below. That in itself is a little odd – a musical project being pursued in both languages.
Rite trax via Plot 22, the venue and studio space down by the old markets in Sheffield, is helping a whole range of creatives and performers with their art, events, development. Futurhood av and F4mmedia (both me) are there to help as well, providing a range of help and support, products and services.

You can be surprised when you go out and about for a wander. I went to visit my daughter in Derby the other day. It was such a joy seeing her and then we added to that by taking a good walk around parts of the city centre. I had few expectations of Derby as a city and was really surprised. We managed to find a whole raft of interesting little alleyways, the odd arcade, nice pubs, cafes and more – art shops included.
I have a love of places where history has added texture to what is around you, even better when that texture still has life and is felt and enjoyed.
Sometimes if you open the door to a new memory it will serve you for a long time. If that door and what surrounds it has a history placed well within the present it can mean something more.

Any town or city has its own particular life. Its heart is made up of a number of things – there is its working life, its history, but partiuclarly there is its social life, its nightlife. It may be the case that a city has its very own stars. It may have its glittery big clubs and bars. What sits at the back of all such is the little place. I have a great fondness for small venues and all that they give. So often they are the birth places of much grander things but more importantly they are the life of the interesting. There is a particular review of the Golden Cross in Coventry, it states that it was the birth place of the Specials. I can remember meeting John Bradbury there and subsequently did a really, really bad audition at his place, Wyken cum Walsgrave. That place has a history going back to 1581 – I just remeber it in the 70s and the upstairs bar cum club. Downstairs it was a place I spent time with old mates such as Nigel Osgood, Tim Hill, Dave Wicks and more from my Bablake school days.
Later in life I had an association with the Earl in Sheffield. It was once a pound house – where livestock was lodged as people came into the town (before it was a true city) to trade. It became the home of a great clubnight – Spannered, with breaks at its core. Before that I had spent a lot of time at the East House – once dubbed the Dodge City Saloon because of the shooting there many, many years before. I djed at the place and loved my time there. These have now ceased being venues/pubs.
Latterly I did a lot of work with the Redhouse, itself roughly 300 years old. This was a place that gave life to a whole raft of small club nights, began the careers of bands and saw visitors from all over the world. In that place I have spoken more languages than I can remember. I surprised those coming down to the Botswana day celebrations one year – they were not expecting a white guy to speak to them in Sesotho. Otheres have heard me practice my few words of Malay, Greek, Poruguese, French, Dutch, German, Serbo-Croat, Swahili, Turkish, to name a few (and no I am not boasting, as I say, ‘if you stand still long enough, you will be surprised who walks past’).

As you may have guessed I have something of an eclectic taste in music. Particular forms of music fit with various of my moods – and no I am not just endlessly moody! I do, however, run through a whole gamut of feelings in the average day and so sucha typical day can be filled variously with anything from deep, soulful and chilled house
– I also have a love of old soul from early 60s days through to new soul – nusoul, neo soul – by way of 80s and 90s sounds
– on into moody trip hop – I retain a real love of all sorts of artists from Portishead to London Grammar by way of Bonobo and the list would go on endlessly
– and then to drum and bass, which would include the full range of old jungle, raggaed up or not, and including liquid, atmospheric and intelligent – so my tastes go from Congo Natty to Bukem, from Marcus Visionary to Calibre

The birthday weekend was interesting – family were well present and differently entertaining.
After the major party we headed off to see Artful Dodger and be reminded of old 2 step days, then from there an afterparty which took me back to old days of full weekend free parties and the obligatory afterparty. I was reminded of all those old days in my 50s watching the light levels rise and being annoyed by ravenous insect life from the nearby water. I am now just about sober – fourish days later …
While running through this party weekend I remember talking to an old friend and we agreed upon that quality of the chill out afterparty – that quality which you can palpably feel where the music you are then listening to, the place you are occupying and enjoying is enriched by the continuing reminiscence, the immediate reminiscence, that afterflavour of the party you have just come from … each interacts with the other.

From my time spent in Africa in the 80s it is really nteresting to see how the whole african music scene has moved on – it has managed a massive integration with major elements of the music scene in both Europe and the USA.
Designs to accompany the new Aromatiq mix.
The music as a whole – vocal deep dubstep, chillstep, intelligent atmospheric dnb has palpable layers and so a design scheme echoing that layering seems to fit. Nothing detracts from a project more than design which bears no real relation to what is presented. Imagery here is drawn from Mongolia, the palms nod elsewhere, water, desert, mountains all play a part.
