There is a real chance I could be doing some work with these guys – supplying visuals and more for various of their events, from the Grosvenor on to a bunch of their other events at venues small and large, outdoors for festival like gigs and on from such.

These guys supply entertainment in so many ways from your usual pub and venue quiz nights, karaoke and lip sunc events, to weddings, birthdays and themed parties, on to club nights, festivals and more. Most of the people involved have played all over Europe and the Mediterranean alongsode really big names (no I am not going to give a list).
There will always be events that surprise you, catching you off guard in a really pleasant way. It’s the same thing with businesses. Rite Trax is a business, it also puts on events and also looks to be a lot more than that as well. Music and its performance may be the first thing that springs to mind, eyes and ears with them but as you should know your eyes and ears can also be delighted and sometimes surprised by its other core interests – art and poetry. Admittedly the art and poetry are not classic gallery and museum pieces, delicately crafted oils and the like, the poetry is not the stuff of high-class salons, coffee table volumes or any of it consumed with a gentle sherry and cigar. The art, poetry, music is the stuff of ordinary, living and working people of the city and beyond. It also magically properly manages to go beyond a lot of club culture and attracts a real range of ages, from youth to (in my case) ancient and greying. All of this is so good. You will find much of it catalogued by a variety of photographers as well – check the Rite Trax website and facebook page.
The average club night has a minimal story, certainly it has a beginning, middle and end, the better events have a particular style of progression fitting that timeline. Art and poetry events tend to be rather more linear and flat, only certain of them have a story that builds. Rite Trax does so much more. Most of their events have a progression that involves a real unfolding of activity and experience with a variety of areas of participation. This can truly be less of a short story or simple monologue, as it were, and far more a mixed or multi genre novel or an interlocking series of episodes all in one.
So – the question is where next for Rite Trax? There will certainly be more events at a range of venues around Sheffield and possibly beyond. The poetry angle and art side of things will be developed, there may be audio books, video, prints and original works of art to be sold and displayed. There is also talk of a record label.

Coming really soon, hopefully I will be doing the visuals again. I am having an absolute ball with these guys. I have djed and vjed for them – at Golden Harvest (soon to be closing down becauseof council re-development in the area) and at the Harley – an old stomping ground of mine. I have also provided them with a little promo work and mini-mixes for the radio show – see below. Very soon a guest mix of mine should be up on their mixcloud channel. I may also put up the Harley mix on my channel. Also thanks to them I vjed @ Garage Night 2 also at Golden Harvest. There may also be a load of work arising as a spin-off – that will be announced a little later.
The Rite Trax gigs are quite a thing – live poetry, art, even live art, live music, dj performance, my visuals and a mix of people that is spectacular. I have spoken so many languages at these gigs – it is untrue. These events are so special – get down. Also check out their show on Reform Radio.

I used to love my club nights. Spent a lot of time at the Arches in Sheffield. I was to be found mainly in the upstairs bar cum chillout area, not so much downstairs in the main room (apart from, if I can remember, Grooverider). The Adelphi became a club after its time as a cinema – worked the door there – even for the deaf discos (quite unusual). These places provided a diet of techno (acid and otherwise), drum and bass, jungle, hardcore and a whole lot more.
I may be in my 60s but I still love it all. It may be the case that I do not quite have the stamina I used to have but I still love performing and being on the dance floor, chillout room, anywhere around events such.

I have written previously on the subject of small venues. In a different blog – f4mmedia – I looked particularly at the Redhouse, a Sheffield venue typified as providing the widest range of music in South Yorkshire. I love small venues – so much friendlier, warmer, more personal. I have worked at quite a number and DJed at many. These have included:
- the East House, now a cake shop and cafe, once known as the Dodge City saloon courtesy of murders decades ago
- the Tea Gardens, now a food store, once a temperance house
- the Harley, still going!
- the Earl, once a pound house, stables in the rear
The East House was the venue where futurhood was first established leading to the creation of futurhood av. Its origins lie in the phrase ‘in the neighbourhood of the future – that’s where we are’, a phrase coined by a close friend. This was the venue where I re-engaged with djing putting on nights based around northern soul, ska, classic soul, liquid dnb, 2 step garage, funk, deep house and all sorts of other material.
The Earl was the venue giving rise to an event which made some personal history for me and the group of friends with whom I co-promoted – Spannered. we use to say it did what it says on the tin. Based around breaks, techno and other electronica, it made DJ mags top ten nights in the land and forged brief links with other DJ mags. it was the venue which saw the birth of Aromatiq.
The Redhouse was a major step in my own history of involvement with small venues. Aside from dealing with security I put on events and djed for others. The range of music included ska – all 3 waves and most languages, house, techno, trance, mashups, funk, jazz funk, deep house, balkan, african, latin of all varieties, dubstep, dnb, garage, broken beat, nujazz, nusoul and probably a load I have forgotten.
As a youth back in Coventry I grew up with original ska and rocksteady. I had a lot to do with Foleshill, certainly then a part of Cov with a large Jamaican population. As I grew up I managed to meet one or two of the people who would later figure quite highly in the development of the next movement on for ska – 2 tone. Much later indeed I picked up by chance an LP called ‘freestyle ska’ – after the heydays of 2 tone Longsy D in particular put together forms of ska with liberal admixtures of house and hip hop. Since then ska has had a 3rd wave, with the influence of all sorts of other musical genres, not the least being Latin, Punk and a whole raft of ethnically differentiated musics. We have witnessed such major artists as the Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, other big band versions have included outfits from New York, St. Petersburg, Melbourne and beyond. I have in my collection ska sung in a ridiculous quantity of languages – Ska-P in Spanish, French ska bands, German, Portuguese, Latvian, Croatian, Hungarian, Polish, Russian as well as the plethora of American ska still doing the turns.
