Coming very soon to a particular venue in Sheffield – Funky Town, upstairs in the old West Street Alehouse – is Hidden Junction a weekly thrusady night extravanganza, but not too extravagant, from Rite Trax. This is the outfit with whom I regularly perform. I will undoubtedly be providing visuals for this event as with the others, in addition I will be DJing a regular set – Around the world in 80 raves. This will provide something either in keping with the night or a useful contrast. The difference with these sets will be that they will involve either a different genre or sub-genre of music or a different point of origin.
The opening few sets are likely to include:
- broken beat
- balkan mashups
- italo house
- italo disco
- future kizomba
- zouk bass
- zouk love
- retro zouk – classics
- japanese lounge – shibuya kei
- canadian drum and bass
- french triphop
- african deep house
Let me know of any suggestions you have.
The whole Rite Trax experience is something that is growing. It may have a core of banging club nights but it is much more and will grow those extra features over the coming weeks, months and more. It may be useful for those with artworks, hand crafted materials, music and all such to get in touch with them.

I chanced upon this website offering up radio station listening to stattions all over the world. I found a particular station, it seems based in northern Brazil in Jericoacoara. I thought that I would explore via google maps and found what is a most remarkable place. With the most incredible beaches in front of me, then shops, streets and more reminding me of my time in Africa with trip hop playing in the background … I was transported to feelings of real comfort and joy in places such as the Harley in Sheffield, back some years ago, along with the joys of discovering a whole variety of new, gentle, thoughtful and imaginative sounds and beats. There was the subdued lighting and relaxed joy of those venues, good drinks, sweet beats. Then in front of me were the memories of times in Lesotho, gentler times, good people, warmth, physical and emotional (even though there was a war going on).

I have even got to the point of looking for work in the place. Somewhow I think I might enjoy the place. For me, as well, the music on the radio station fits in a peculiar way. It is not the local music – forro! Nor is it particularly south american, but the trip hop being played had all of the gentle imagination and subtle emotion that goes with a very distinct, warm sunset which is itself bracketed by a day of heat, gentle walking, getting on with things, and then a night of drinks, dance and food, with its ease in and ease out moments (so trip hop), then bed at ridiculous o’clock.

For every mood and state of emotion there is a music to accompany. Here are a few small journeys, each containing a different style of smile or other expression. There are those deep house moments above, pointing to a particular part of the city, a certain bar and club and the after party to accompany.
… and then there is a different walk through town, it has its own steps … a hint of 2 step, a chilled and deep step or three and more, go on step it out …
There is nothing quite like the right music fitting how mood and emotion is running, in the right place – perhaps a suitably aged and distressed area at the back of a personable pub.
Music means a lot to me as you may have gathered. Particular times and events, particular tunes, I have a catalogue of memories brimful of emotion courtesy of all that. Times out and about – djing events – the old days of partying oddly enough from my late 40s on through my 50s. My 50th birthday was a free party with 3 rigs, shut down by police at 4.30am because we had woken up the Chief Inspector. Festival gigs with my daughters – at one of the Big Bang festivals at the Ski Village, now sadly closed and falling to pieces – an acquaintance of my oldest daughter asked her if she could dance with her boyfriend – the response was, ‘what, he’s my dad’ – such a laugh. My middle daughter saying to her mates – ‘what didn’t you learn about clubbing and parties by going with your dad?’ We were a bit of a different family, but still responsible believe it or not.
There are particular venues I so remember – the Arches, Casbah, the Harley, Corporation, so many more. Days of enjoying trip hop, broken beat, dnb, deep house – the details still recorded in my mind. I so want to go and revisit!
It seems this is doing well in the charts at the moment …
Trip hop has had quite a revival recently. Some years ago we used to play gigs with a hefty dose of Portishead, Bonobo, Tricky,Lamb, Thievery Corporation, Massive Attack and many more. Now we create mixes using a whole raft of London Grammar, Wildlight, Emika, Coco Rosie and so on.
