There is a particular quality about autumn, its beginnings. As days grow a little shorter but there is still a hint of warmth, or at least an absence of real cold. We have gone beyond wild picnics and summer jaunts. There is something of a new beginning taking place, work or study comes to the fore and personally I have the urge to slip into particular bars, run through certain sorts of music and spend evenings in a way that is …
But there is also the sky and the neighbourhood just as the sun sets, strange colourations of things. Musical in its own right. You can find an entertaining or intriguing texture almost anywhere.
These mixes have been put up in preparation for a couple of projects that are upcoming – one is in aid of a charity project for kids and others in Malawi – so keep eyes and ears and, of course, wallets open …

I really like my moody evenings and skies as you might have guessed. I tend to like certain sorts of music that goes with all such. Given my age it might be a little odd for people – I love my chillstep, deep dubstep but then I also love my older balearic chill, deep house and the like.
Mentioned here are a couple of artists that I really have some time for – Soular Order, a Manchester based producer and also Christian Hornbostel. The two are very different but still they have the capacity to add to particular moments and moods. You can find some of the photos from our group on Sellfy –
For every mood and state of emotion there is a music to accompany. Here are a few small journeys, each containing a different style of smile or other expression. There are those deep house moments above, pointing to a particular part of the city, a certain bar and club and the after party to accompany.
… and then there is a different walk through town, it has its own steps … a hint of 2 step, a chilled and deep step or three and more, go on step it out …
The birthday weekend was interesting – family were well present and differently entertaining.
After the major party we headed off to see Artful Dodger and be reminded of old 2 step days, then from there an afterparty which took me back to old days of full weekend free parties and the obligatory afterparty. I was reminded of all those old days in my 50s watching the light levels rise and being annoyed by ravenous insect life from the nearby water. I am now just about sober – fourish days later …
While running through this party weekend I remember talking to an old friend and we agreed upon that quality of the chill out afterparty – that quality which you can palpably feel where the music you are then listening to, the place you are occupying and enjoying is enriched by the continuing reminiscence, the immediate reminiscence, that afterflavour of the party you have just come from … each interacts with the other.
and if you like it old skool and well raggaed up
Blogs so regularly concentrate on one or two related areas of interest. I am of something of a different opinion as you may have realised. I like to add a few resources here and there. Sometimes I like to add music, talk about those tunes, artists and events that I like. I ask myself is it at all wrong to combine all – design, art, resources, music – indeed anything that catches my eye, my ear, my interest, my imagination, my concern. Thus …
Yes it is friday 13th !!!

This is a combined birthday bash for me and Shakira – my talented and beautiful daughter …

Adding suitable design or illustration to music – a single piece or a mix – makes a big difference. Mood and emotive qualities are part of the heartbeat of any music.
There are particular emotional qualities to a sunset, sometimes hesitant, sometimes warm, somehow comforting even though it signals an ending – the end of the day. It does signal the start of evening or night and the gentle winding down of effort.
Having an urban skyline and occasional foliage also adds an extra quality.
Download if you wish. Stock photos are always useful.
Here is some music to accompany …
Design for music projects and other areas of entertainment has the same contraints as any design for a product or service. It is design for a purpose, even though you can have real fun while doing it.
Adding design to such – the content needs to fit. It should extend all that the project says, add further depth, possibly suggest other areas of intent, other possible areas of meaning, an expansion. Providing further references, emotion, semantic indicators.
Aromatiq, the brand, has been around for a while. It began as just an event at a local venue – the Earl. It continued, later, at the Redhouse. Originally it was based around broken beat, nujazz, nusoul, deep house, hip hop, intelligent dnb. It has expanded into chillstep, deep dubstep and chill house, as well as the revival of trip hop. The design here hopes to add further depth to all that the brand, the event, the mixes and the original music videos says.
