Strange times -perhaps recovery

Posted on Updated on

These have been strange times for us all, the world over, all ages and backgrounds. This pandemic has made an impact on us all. Back in the 50s there was a polio epidemic which gave me an experience. It took my mother when I was 3 years old, a wonderful woman I am told, I was too young to retain any real memories, all I have is one image of a kitchen, a stove and an old lady bringing her bicycle into the room through the back door. Covid has given me a reminder – one friend has passed because of all of this, two others have been infected adding to their existing deep health problems – one in seemingly endless pain, another wheelchair bound. So many fiorends have been lost to me – moving away, passing, being lost to me for other reasons.

Roughly 5 years ago I made a chance meeting with some guys – Rite Trax – who brought life back to me. Having had a background in clubnights, entertainment, music and visuals, they gave me a chance to relive what I had considered to be life itself. I resumed performance, they gave me reason, purpose, a chance for new creativity and once more a real social life. That social life was not just an ordinary, everyday life of a few minutes chatting with the odd friend, minutes or perhaps an hour at my local pub. This was a social life of real connection – real life with depth and purpose, as I said. For someone in their 60s this can be unusual, for me it was reason, foundation, solidity. Then just a while ago their venue – Plot 22 – was shut down because of noise problems and major work had to ensue so that basically one complainer could be assuaged alongside the local council – neither of whom are particularly nice nor helpful in any way. Just as work was coming to a close, having enlisted an academic specialist, an engineer of sorts who had real experience of sound proofing technology, and thus an end to roughly one year of not being able to live that life the hope I had of resuming performance and living that joyful element of my life, guess what? Covid appeared and dashed those hopes. My heart was emptied and given everything that was to happen I had that imminent thought that I would not be able to return to that life with at least moments of energy, that combination of solid foundation and brightness, soft smiles and companionship. I had every sad thought of this pandemic finishing the job of leaving me to gradually waste away into a sad life of just the local pub, no friends and just occaisional visits from family. But then a moment or two of meeting with the guys from the Plot and suddenly I am told – you are one of the crew. That welcome dismembered those feelings of low key horror and suddenly after helping set up an outdoor party feelings of belonging returned.

After all of this new thoughts have sprung to mind even though so much of my equipment and software has died on me, thus a new project – an audio-visual art piece cum collection ‘Biblionaut’, he who walks with words [(c) 2020 Derek Bate] – is currently being given birth.

There is nothing quite like a good independant club night. Rite Trax are just one of the local purveyors, of course, along with Peachy and crew. I will be providing visuals for each of these and spinning a few at the Grooveyard event.

There is a real chance I could be doing some work with these guys – supplying visuals and more for various of their events, from the Grosvenor on to a bunch of their other events at venues small and large, outdoors for festival like gigs and on from such.

These guys supply entertainment in so many ways from your usual pub and venue quiz nights, karaoke and lip sunc events, to weddings, birthdays and themed parties, on to club nights, festivals and more. Most of the people involved have played all over Europe and the Mediterranean alongsode really big names (no I am not going to give a list).

Yorkshire wanderings

You may have noticed that I like to have a wander around some strange places it may seem. There are things to notice that can give joy. Where a place has some history and shows a life lived then there is something, at least for me, to gain and enjoy. Distress, age and even dereliction can say a lot, particularly when contrasted close by by tidier, more recent building. You can find something in things discarded as well as those things pristine and new. Why not take a wander and just look at the sorts of things you would normally ignore.

Getting around performing with the Rite Trax crew is a real joy for me – places, people, music, art, poetry. Each of these strands gives something real for me. I ended up in Scarborough the other week. The drive there and back was as much a joy, having taken a wrong turn we went through a pile of villages and small towns – North yorkshire. We had the chance to chat, of course I told some incredible stories (I have that most delightful of senses of humour, a grandad’s).

Sheffield, Rite, Trax, DINA – threads for a new cloth

Posted on

a few old tunes ranging from chillstep through a whole range of gentle drum and bass onwards, an ebook accompanies with text and illustration

Source: In a House of Red | f4mmedia – Sellfy.com

There is nothing quite like a city at night with a that night being ahead of you with impending lacings, lashings of entertainment. It is made richer when there is a variety of textures around you – the newly devloped, places in the middle of development, the old, the older still, the newly decorated, moving from quietish to busy and full of one life or another.

I was certainly surprised to be greeted by a statement in the Rite Trax timeline praising me for a statement that I made that night – that it had been the best I had had for some time – I was given a big up for such. This was a night of some surprises, though, for me. The venue – DINA – was an absolute delight. Good and friendly staff, both behind the bar and on the door – having been a doorman and having had events to run and venues to service, I know how useful door staff can be in making a night good. Striking a balance between friendliness and adherence to rules, not being the archetypal growling bouncer, these are the orders of the day. The venue was great – it had real texture to it, upstairs, downstairs and all. On this night there was poetry and art in the front bar area, behind that the main room and an extra dj area upstairs.

Having enjoyed having a chat and a laugh with a whole pile of the usual crew and one or two new faces what capped it all of was Mark Archer running through a raft of old skool classics including what is perhaps my favourite tune of that particular era – Gat Decor, Passion

There is also a vocal version here –

The only thing missing was my hope to hear Jaydee – Plastic Dreams once more.

What we have here is a growing thread of mixed events. Rite Trax is doing something that has been done only marginally before, bringing more than just the club night or the art event to Sheffield. There is more coming …

The Old Markets reviving

Posted on

It is interesting to see how areas of cities develope. The old markets area in the centre of Sheffield is getting a revamp courtesy of ordinary folks who have an interest in music, the arts, performance and small business. I was down at Bal fashions for the Wub Club event the other night and had a great time. The bar there is awesome and the efforts put in by all concerned was truly amazing. Rite Trax are opening up a place just a couple of doors down, Plot something or other, name TBD, where studios will sit beside a general business, meeting and event area. Here you see businesses geographically close helping each other. It is just a shame that the local council do not share the same attitude at times. It seems that they are more interested in the big corporate side of things. So many times we have seen small and enjoyable venues, interesting shops and ventures closed down courtesy of the council’s narrow point of view. But the artists, performers, craftspeople and small businesses of Sheffield still continue to create exciting places, events and products.

Opposite these ventures is the old Market Tavern – now there was a place with character. It may yet get a boost with new owners. Just below that is Frehiwet Habesha, an Eritrean restaurant cum cafe. More is being planned by a whole range of people. This is an area that could become something very special if we give it some support and enjoy what is being offered.

Around the world in 80 raves – Hidden Junction

Posted on

Coming very soon to a particular venue in Sheffield – Funky Town, upstairs in the old West Street Alehouse – is Hidden Junction a weekly thrusady night extravanganza, but not too extravagant, from Rite Trax. This is the outfit with whom I regularly perform. I will undoubtedly be providing visuals for this event as with the others, in addition I will be DJing a regular set – Around the world in 80 raves. This will provide something either in keping with the night or a useful contrast. The difference with these sets will be that they will involve either a different genre or sub-genre of music or a different point of origin.

The opening few sets are likely to include:

  • nujazz
  • nusoul
  • broken beat
  • balkan mashups
  • italo house
  • italo disco
  • future kizomba
  • zouk bass
  • zouk love
  • retro zouk – classics
  • japanese lounge – shibuya kei
  • canadian drum and bass
  • french triphop
  • african deep house

Let me know of any suggestions you have.

sight

The whole Rite Trax experience is something that is growing. It may have a core of banging club nights but it is much more and will grow those extra features over the coming weeks, months and more. It may be useful for those with artworks, hand crafted materials, music and all such to get in touch with them.

Jericoacoara, Radio Garden, trip hop and the world

Posted on Updated on

You chance upon one thing, which leads you to another, which takes you on somewhere else and the journey is …

I chanced upon this website offering up radio station listening to stattions all over the world. I found a particular station, it seems based in northern Brazil in Jericoacoara. I thought that I would explore via google maps and found what is a most remarkable place. With the most incredible beaches in front of me, then shops, streets and more reminding me of my time in Africa with trip hop playing in the background … I was transported to feelings of real comfort and joy in places such as the Harley in Sheffield, back some years ago, along with the joys of discovering a whole variety of new, gentle, thoughtful and imaginative sounds and beats. There was the subdued lighting and relaxed joy of those venues, good drinks, sweet beats. Then in front of me were the memories of times in Lesotho, gentler times, good people, warmth, physical and emotional (even though there was a war going on).

I have even got to the point of looking for work in the place. Somewhow I think I might enjoy the place. For me, as well, the music on the radio station fits in a peculiar way. It is not the local music – forro! Nor is it particularly south american, but the trip hop being played had all of the gentle imagination and subtle emotion that goes with a very distinct, warm sunset which is itself bracketed by a day of heat, gentle walking, getting on with things, and then a night of drinks, dance and food, with its ease in and ease out moments (so trip hop), then bed at ridiculous o’clock.
