Rite Trax – Trafalgar Warehouse – A Guy Called Gerald

Posted on Updated on

Source: Facebook

Lots of fun was had at the Rite Trax 1st birthday bash. Personally, as Futurhood av, I was providing vj performance alongside Joe from Damp Studios. We projected side by side all night and it was real fun. There were also artists and more providing interesting additions to the whole event. A Guy Called Gerald was the headliner – see below. He is well known for his old skool work as well as his current performance and output – we had a nice chat and a fag later on. Mistabishi was there as well, it was nice to catch up – not seen him in a while but the performance, like Gerald’s, was electric. Great support came from all the rest – Isis Moray, Cryptic, Phatworld and all the rest. Looking forward to more.

It is a vibrantly new thing – Rite Trax – combining a variety of music, presenting club nights alongside art experiences and spoken word poetry. We have all run across each of these things separately, the combination is something really very different. All of it should be supported. Why leave your senses unfulfilled. Most of us love our music and appreciate the visual and the word based forms of expression. With these events and everything presented through the website (see below), you can have all of this together or in part. On top of this when there is music there also tends to be vj performance as well (often from me).

Events – RiteTrax #009, Garage Night, Reform Radio, more

Source: RiteTrax #009

Coming really soon, hopefully I will be doing the visuals again. I am having an absolute ball with these guys. I have djed and vjed for them – at Golden Harvest (soon to be closing down becauseof council re-development in the area) and at the Harley – an old stomping ground of mine. I have also provided them with a little promo work and mini-mixes for the radio show – see below. Very soon a guest mix of mine should be up on their mixcloud channel. I may also put up the Harley mix on my channel. Also thanks to them I vjed @ Garage Night 2 also at Golden Harvest. There may also be a load of work arising as a spin-off – that will be announced a little later.

The Rite Trax gigs are quite a thing – live poetry, art, even live art, live music, dj performance, my visuals and a mix of people that is spectacular. I have spoken so many languages at these gigs – it is untrue. These events are so special – get down. Also check out their show on Reform Radio.

Room 303

10171073_10152394069745734_3563437934730790152_n

This month’s Room 303 is a special one as two of the crew are celebrating 30 years on this doomed floating rock we call home. Dave and Lee will be taking over proceedings for one night only to celebrate their respective oldenings. It’s Lee’s first time back since the year we vaguely remember as “2009”, back before he moved to the hive of scum and villainy that is Leeds, and Dave’s first time back since he last played the night about three months ago. How time flies. Anyway, we hope you’ll help us celebrate our birthdays with some good music and good company. Growing old is serious business, Dave currently can’t use his hands.

So, to the line-up:

JOHNNY SIDEWAYS (Kaotek Wreckords)
After making an impact on the UK’s underground scene around the turn of the century, Johnny made his vinyl début in 2003 on techno label Dirtbomb records, though by this time was already developing the harder, breakbeat infused sound he would become renowned for, taking in influences from Hardcore Techno and the European Tribe/Hardtek sounds he was playing while DJ’ing for the legendary Desert Storm Soundsystem. In 2005 he formed his own label Kaotek Wreckords, as an outlet for the hybrid sounds he and others were producing. Now having played countless livesets in destinations all over Europe, and a back catalogue spanning 10 years on labels such as Tekiteazy, Electrokanibal, Absolute Rhythm and more, Johnny Sideways chews up and spits out genres into a living wall of sound..improvised, upfront and engaging..a purists nightmare..and devastating on the dancefloor.

BUSMONITOR (Kaotek Wreckords)
Phil ‘Busmonitor’ has been making noises in the hardcore techno scene of late, not least with his releases on Mr. Sideways’ Kaotek imprint. A veteran of countless events in several locations, he’s a professional floor wrecker with access to cutting edge sonic weaponry. Not for the feint-hearted.

SLAUGHTERED LAMB (Room 303 / Euphonic)
A real workhorse of a DJ, Gareth has been making music go into peoples’ ears since most of us were, you know, not doing that. He’s been through many names and many venues over his career, but one thing has remained constant: He’s bald.

MUMBLIST B2B SINISTA:TEK (Room 303 / Tinnitus)
An auditory battle of the century between two powerhouses of the sheffield rave scene. On the surface Dave and Sam are rather musically disparate, which is what makes this match-up so intriguing. Either it will go well, or it will go really fucking well. Unexpect the expected.

DOOMPATROL (Room 303 / Tinnitus)
To mark his Room 303 return after five years, Lee is bringing his Doompatrol alias out of retirement for one night only, and playing a set laced with tracks from that era back to his first ever set in ’07. If you notice him shed a single tear during this nostalgiathon, please be sensitive and don’t point and laugh.

DARKUS

“With over ten years in the game, playing the north and south of the UK, Darkus knows how to bring the noise, Dark by name Dark by nature: welcome to the Darkside.”

ANN D – https://soundcloud.com/#ann-d-1

“Ann D started Dj-ing in the time honoured way, playing a weekly 3 hour show on a pirate in the late 90’s, not because she woke up one morning wanting to be a DJ but because it was the only way to get the sort of show she wanted to listen to. After years of going to blue’s clubs, festivals and dancing her way through many music styles she had a vinyl collection that ranged from Prince Fari, Alpha & Omega, Beefheart, The Velvet Underground to The Orb, A Guy Called Gerald, the dirtiest English & German techno, breaks and DnB – that’s the kinda radio show she wanted to hear. Bizarrely and despite not having decks or being able to mix a cake, after about a year she was booked to play out, at which point she thought I’d better buy some technics and learn how to mix. Since then she has gone on to play all over the UK, Europe & Mexico playing with everyone from Rootsman, Richard Kirk, Aphex Twin, Tayo, The SUF Liberators & The Orb on their tour, she was resident at a night called Headcharge which often made the Mixmag top ten best nights in the UK before the council closed the venue down, she’s guested on numerous Radio shows both here & in Berlin, appeared on Channel 4, produced the soundtrack for a photographer’s book launch, featured in documentaries, written articles for various music mags and is soon to soundtrack a short film. She still continues to play a weekly show, on a legal station now – SCR Radio and thinks she’s lucky to be able to share her tunes.”

north n south (DJs Si McLean & Rich Pastrami)

These guys linked hands across The Watford Gap with the purpose of bringing old skool party vibes to The Steel City. Eclectic dance floor focussed sets are their bread and butter and they will be keeping things bass heavy for this party. Expect jungle, d n b, house, hardcore and old skool rave classics. BOOM!!

A patchwork history 8 – feedback, a drum and bass night

Posted on

feedback

Part of my history, indeed a large part of relatively recent history for me as a visual performer was doing the visuals for feedback – Shefield’s premier drum and bass night. It was held @ the Corp – as it is known here – the Corporation nightclub in central Sheffield. I had been a drum and bass head for some time, although I can say that I have somewhat moved on in terms of my main tastes in music these days – I have left behind my early middle age. I still do like some of the stuff produced, but I remain a greater lover of the lighter ends of dnb – intelligent, liquid, the smoother and more rolling, melodic ends of the genre than the harder, darker, rougher ends preferred by many of the younger crew. As always I tend to always be the oldest participant in any event – unless, of course it is some pensioners night out – not there yet!

It was fun doing it all – creating the animations, the video flyers, filming bits and pieces of each club night, creating bespoke text animations for each performer, doing something new for each, often having the general palette of the visuals follow the flyer and poster designs. Paul and Little G are still friends of mine – the promoters.

The night itself combined both local talent, including very often the well respected local MC – E-LL, as well as the top talents of the national dnb scene.

http://www.soundcloud.com/deathmachine
http://www.soundcloud.com/matt-green

Hardcore / Industrial heavyweights; Deathmachine & Matt Green.
Owner of Corrupt Records. A name now closely linked to
the many substyles of hardcore, London born producer
Matt Green has had releases on labels like Epileptik
and Hong Kong Violence. Flying in from Warsaw Poland,
he will go head to head with one of the UK’s best
Hardcore / Industrial dj’s.

Deathmachine’s love for hard, dark mechanical music
started way back in the early 90’s where his imagination
was captured by the then relatively young hardcore scene.
Always dancefloor orientated, but with an experimental edge,
his sets earned him bookings from all the major promotors
across the UK. With releases on the genre-defining
Genosha One Seven Five and Union Recordings,
Deathmachine is established as one of the leading
producers in the scene.

ORIFICE aka Scott Kemix Vs MACHINIST
Room 303 / Panzram

http://www.scottkemix.co.uk
http://www.soundcloud.com/scottkemix
http://www.soundcloud.com/panzram-industrial

Orifice is fresh from a tour of South America
where he destroyed the dance floors of Columbia & Venezuela
with his signature “hard as f**k style”
Orifice’s latest ep “Of The Gods” on Motormouth Recordz,
is getting support from some of the biggest hitters in
the underground scene, both here in the UK and all over
Europe including The Dj Producer (Rebel Scum) &
Sandy Warez (TTM, Footworxx) As well his South American
tour, Orifice has played all over Europe at some of the biggest
events & clubs including Florida 135 (Barcelona)
Hangar 1 (Ostende) K2 (Budapest)
As well as his own label “Giveway” he has released on the likes
of Madhouse, Elementz, G-Not Extreme. Going up against Panzram’s
own “Machinist” there set will be for those that like it extreme,
expect Industrial & Hardcore so hard there will be bleeding ears.

………………………………………….

BEE-LOGg Vs ERASERHEAD
Tinnitus/Tiki

Expect absolutely mental Breakcore and Gabber from these two experts of the scene. Eraserhead has been plying his trade in Bristol for years, alongside Breakcore legends. With releases on the much heralded Peace Off Records, this is an artist you certainly don’t want to miss. Bee-Log has been smashing in Sheffield, since he learnt how to smash it. We here at Room 303 are particularly delighted to have secured his services. Bee-Log has been smashing at Tinnitus, and with releases on Marionette, this vs battle is something that you certainly wouldn’t want to miss!

………………………………………….

NRK [sc] Vs JACK SCHMALTZ

http://www.mixcloud.com/jackschmaltz
http://www.soundcloud.com/jackschmaltz

Going head to head for the first time will be Panzram residents
Nrk & Jack Schmaltz. Hailing from Scotland, Nrk has destroyed
dancefloors all over Scotland at events like Impact,
BTTF @ The Arches & With releases on Motormouth, Furious Monkey
& Omega records, Nrk will bring with him his hard as nail’s style
of Hardcore & Industrial. Jack Schmaltz plays out across the UK
at some of the best party’s in the scene, Expect Jack to bring
an arsenal of aggressive beats from Crossbreed through to
Industrial & everything in between.

…………………………………………

MUMBLIST Vs A.R.D.
Room 303

The two head honchos of Room 303 go back to back for only the second time. With the combination of styles these two possess, expect anything and everything! Hardcore, Drum & Bass, Industrial, Hardcore Techno, Monkstep. If it’s hard, and good they’ll be playing it. These two never mess around, so expect bad ass business!
